Best Spots In Northern Norways The Lofoten Islands

Northern Norway is one of the most spectacular places in the world. We were fortunate to spend several weeks there exploring this amazing part of the world. These are some of our favorite spots from our time in Norway that made us stop and go wow. Make sure to check out our Perfect 10 Day Northern Norway Itinerary to make the best of your trip.
Festvagtind

This view was one of my favourites in the Lofotens. This is the view from the Festvågtind hike, which is a popular summit hike on the outskirts of Henningsvaer. It is a moderately challenging, 3km round trip with a 541-meter elevation gain, with panoramic views of the surrounding islands. It is a very steep ascent, so make sure to bring hikers or trail runners as it gets quite slippery in sections. There are multiple spots to take beautiful photos and you can really see the intricate bridges between the islands from the summit.
Hamnøy

Hamnøy is one of the cutest villages in the Lofoten, and the views here are just so picturesque. If you look up the Lofoten Island’s online, you will see this photo everywhere, as it is the most iconic view! When we were there a rainbow even came out, it was incredible. You can get this exact photo by parking your car and walking onto the bridge that overlooks these red traditional cabins. Make sure to walk around the little town too, as it is super cute. We stayed in Hamnoy for 2 nights and it was a great base.
Ryten

Ryten is another must-do hike in the Lofoten Islands. It has an epic panoramic view of Kvalvikka Beach and uninterrupted ocean views. If you can get up there for sunset on a clear day, you will not regret it! The parking area is quite big and you do have to pay about $10usd to park, so make sure you bring cash. The hike itself is about 7.5km with 570m elevation gain, so give yourself a good 4-5 hours. You can also add on to the hike by walking down to the beach!
Kvalvika Beach

As mentioned prior, this is an add on to the Ryten hike! If you have the energy and time you can go all the way down to the beach or to some lower viewpoints on the trail.
Reine

Reine is one of the most touristed towns in the Lofotens, and it is where you will find several cute restaurants, cafes and the most hotels in the area. It takes a good half day to walk around, so give yourself some time here to enjoy the views and do a little shopping. The infamous Reinebringen hike starts from Reine too, so make sure to add that to your itinerary. The spot in this picture is on a little bridge in the residential area of town.
Reinebringen

This is the most famous hiking spot in all of the Lofotens. You will see this view everywhere on the internet and for good reason as it is stunning! We actually hiked up twice and had poor weather both times, but if you get up here for a clear sunset the views are even wilder. This hike is located right outside of Reine and is 5.8km over 484-meter elevation gain with 1968 stairs!
Sakrisøy

Sakrisøy is one of the smallest islands in the Lofotens, and it is known for it’s cute little yellow houses. The one in the picture is the most iconic, and you will actually find this little house on many tourist postcards and souvenirs. Sakrisoy is only 3km from Reine. You will find yourself driving through here on any Lofoten’s trip so make sure to stop!
Trolsketunga

This spot was actually really hard to find, and I am so happy that we put the effort into finding it, as it was such a cool hiking location. This reminded me of a little Trolltunga, which is the epic fjord hike in Southern Norway. You can find Trolsketunga by hiking up to Festvagtind but instead of looping to the left, go to the right! At first it seems like you are going off trail, but then you will see some sketchy hiking trails along a cliff bluff. Be very careful and follow these until you find this spot! It is about 3.5k over 540m!
Henningsvær

This town is described as the Venice of the North, and for good reason is it is built upon the cutest harbor with colorful houses lined along the main canal. This town had some amazing thrift shops and coffee shops, and it was a good base for this part of the island. Henningsvaer is also known to be the place with the most beautiful football field in the world. The football field is located right at the end of town and if you have a drone, you can take some epic shots.
Skagsanden Beach

This beach is one of the best surfing spots and chill spots in all of the Lofotens, and also has the biggest campsite. If you have a van or are car camping, make sure to stay here! It is also home to Lofoten Beach Camp. Here you can rent surfboards and wetsuits, and surf in the Arctic. They have a gorgeous sauna to warm up in after and the restaurant and bar are super chill too.
