Jack Point Trail (Nanaimo, BC)

Jack Point is a great trail in Nanaimo that provides excellent views of the city, Gabriola Island, Protection Island and the Nanaimo river estuary. It is situated right by the Duke Point Ferry and it is very easy to access. Despite its close proximity to the mill and the ferry, the trail is blocked by cliffs and trees, so it actually feels like you are in a very secluded area beside the ocean.

The whole pathway is very picturesque, for it is lined with hundreds of arbutus trees and it curves right along side the ocean. If you choose to walk along the beach you can find some very interesting sand-stoned caves as well.

Right at the tip of the point there is a light house and a rock bluff, which is a great spot to hang out for awhile and enjoy the view. There are always float planes hovering past and ferries sailing by. I have seen a variety of wildlife almost every time I have gone out including bald eagles, seals and otters. It is also a great spot to whale watch during there migration season.

Walking Directions

The trail starts at Biggs Park in Duke Point, and after parking your car you head right through the walking tunnel towards the ocean. The 2.5km one way path is really well maintained and there are some sections with wooden stairs to climb.  The trail loops around at the point and during low tide you can even choose to walk along the beach in some sections.
